Internet Speed Converter

Enter a speed in any unit. This tool shows the same speed in every other unit at once. It keeps bits and bytes straight, so the numbers line up.

Enter a speed to see every unit.

Lowercase b is bits (Kbps, Mbps, Gbps). Capital B is bytes (KB/s, MB/s), which are 8 times larger. Steps between Kbps, Mbps, and Gbps are 1000.

How It Works

Type a number and pick the unit it is in. The tool converts that to a base of bits per second, then shows the value in every other unit.

Results update live. Switch the unit and the whole list refreshes.

The tricky part is bits versus bytes. Mbps, Gbps, and Kbps count bits. KB/s and MB/s count bytes, which are 8 times bigger. The converter applies that factor of 8 for you.

The Formula

1 byte = 8 bits, so MB/s = Mbps ÷ 8 and Mbps = MB/s × 8

Every value first becomes bits per second. A speed of 1 Mbps is 1,000,000 bits per second.

To show bytes, divide by 8. So 1 Mbps is 0.125 MB/s, and 8 Mbps is 1 MB/s.

To move up a step, multiply by 1000. 1000 Mbps is 1 Gbps, and 1000 Kbps is 1 Mbps.

Worked Example

Take a common plan speed of 100 Mbps.

Divide by 8 for bytes: 100 ÷ 8 is 12.5 MB/s. Step down for kilobits: 100 Mbps is 100,000 Kbps.

Step up for gigabits: 100 Mbps is 0.1 Gbps. The tool shows all of these together.

Common Uses

  • Translating a plan speed in Mbps into the MB/s your download manager shows.
  • Comparing two plans quoted in different units.
  • Reading a speed test that reports one unit when you need another.
  • Sanity-checking a Gbps fiber plan against everyday megabit figures.

Frequently Asked Questions

Browsers and download tools report megabytes per second, while plans advertise megabits. There are 8 bits in a byte, so divide the Mbps figure by 8.
